Chapter Seven

Hi, Miss Bethany!” Toby held open the door for her to enter his house.

“Hi. Are you ready for school time?” She stepped inside, holding a tote bag in one hand and a plate of Christmas cutout cookies in the other.

Ty stood behind the door.

She jumped, nearly dropping the cookies.

Ty steadied the plate. “Easy there. Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“What are you doing there?”

“Toby beat me to the door.” He shot his son a disapproving frown. “Once I realized it was you, I stayed here. Didn’t think.”

“It’s fine.” She thrust the plate toward him. “These are for you and Toby. Lexie and I baked last night.”

Ty’s eyes widened. “Christmas cookies. Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” She looked down at Toby who eagerly looked at the plate.

“Can I have one now?”

“After dinner,” Ty said.

Toby frowned.

She should have kept the cookies in the car until after their meal. “Are we going to work in the kitchen or someplace else?”

“I set up a portable table and chairs in my office for the two of you. I thought you could get started while I make dinner. Toby had a snack, so he should be good for a while. Can I get you anything? Water? An apple for the teacher?” He quirked a grin.

“I’m fine. I snacked too.” On way too many cookies to be exact. Trimming the tree had taken longer than expected, so she and Lexie had baked until almost ten last night. Then they’d cleaned for the next hour. Well past tired, she’d craved sugar and had overindulged.

Ty gently squeezed her shoulder. “Give me forty minutes. Is that enough time to accomplish anything?”

She nodded, unable to find her voice. His touch made her heart beat too fast. This man had an effect on her that she hadn’t experienced in a long time. She needed to get over it. Falling for Ty was a bad idea. At least so long as she was his son’s teacher.

“Great. I’ll be in the kitchen. Toby will lead the way to my office.”

Toby grasped her hand. “Come on, Miss Bethany.” He tugged her hand.

She chuckled. It looked like someone had missed going to school today.

“Did anyone ask where I was?” Toby opened a door and drew her into a square-shaped room with an accent wall painted in forest green and flanked by ivory-colored walls. A bookshelf stood behind a drafting table. A portable table and two chairs sat beneath a window.

The space felt like Ty. Strong, homey, and inviting. She shook her head at the thoughts. Time to focus on why she was here, not her student’s handsome dad. “To answer your question, yes, your classmates asked about you. I told them you were taking the week off and left it at that.”

Toby puckered his lips as if in thought, then his face cleared. “Okay. What are we doing today, Miss Bethany?”

“The usual stuff. Spelling, math, reading.” They sat at the table beneath the window. She’d debated what to bring since her class had spent the afternoon making gifts for their parents.
